Ital Iman I: The title of this story is going to be The Cosmic Church of Truth. Why did you decide to call your church or organization The Cosmic Church of Truth? Ethel: Why did ya? (To Harold) Harold: We didn't it was given by the spirit, and we just followed with the offer. Ital: So what exactly does that mean The Cosmic Church of Truth? I know it's a reason for it even though the spirit gave it to you. Harold: I've never tried to research it, its just that cosmic is out in space, and church of truth, truth is what it is and if its something that isn't truthful then that becomes the lesser of saying what is truth. So its just as simple as what the words are, there is no great dialog or phenomena attachment to it. Its just a title of realms, as long as you abide in truth the cosmos is gonna reap whatever we've sown and go from there. Ital: Can we have a little background and history, like your personal history and education? Harold: Our education is just the curious in finding out the old axiom seek and you shall find, so we go all the way from the farm life to the armed forces and we find that there were people of this caliber and with the affiliation of singulars, why we finally just keep on keepin on and here we are. Ital: Did you know each other in high school? Ethel: Oh no, there's nothing like that. Harold: She was over there in England and I was in the armed forces, the Americans was over there fighting World War II. Ital: So you met in the Army in the service, that was World War II, 1940 what was that? Harold: 1945. Ethel: Yep, 1942 you were over there weren't you? 1943 through 1945. Ital: So then you started courting and you married. What year did you get married? Ethel: 1945 Ital: A year after you met? So was that England where you met? Ethel: Yes. Ital: So the year you were over there, did you stay over there and then come back? Ethel: He came back before me, he came back in November, didn't you? Harold: Yeah. Ethel: That was when the war was over, and then I came in march of 1946.  Ital: So what year did the store start and the church? Ethel: The store started in 1968. Ital: Here in Jacksonville? Ethel: Yes. Ital: So you been here in Jacksonville every since 1968? Ethel: No we've been in Jacksonville since 1952. Ital: But the store opened in '68? Ethel: Yeah, right and the church started in 1970, two years later. Ital: Was it The Cosmic Church of Truth at that time? Ethel: Yes, we named it that right from the beginning. Ital: What was the motivation of the church, did the church or the bookstore come first? Ethel: The bookstore came first. Ital: Was it occult things or metaphysical things? Ethel: More metaphysical things and wanting to teach classes, at that time a book shop couldn't do that. Ital: Okay. Ethel: We had the church started partly because of that. Harold: Become an organization so we wouldn't be questioned by the authorities. Ital: Do you have 501(c)3 Tax Exempt status? Harold: Yes, we are a non profit organization, it's a corporation. Ital: Was it successful right off the bat, or was it long years of struggle? Ethel: Just went along didn?t kind of... Harold: Well it always had its confrontations from the other realms of religious factions. Ital: Being a Southern Baptist area? Harold: Southern Baptist area?there were confrontations, so its always been on the frontier radical, if you will. I imagine you are aware of all the ups and downs of this. Ital: Did you always have an interest in the occult? Was that something you always had an interest in or did it just happen? Harold: It was an accumulation as things go along, cause you back and around the 60's Life Magazine presents the mushroom over in Mexico. Ital: So you were like hippies or something? Ethel: No, no, no we were not hippies. (laughter) Harold: we were just following various things in enlightenment. Ital: Okay, I see. Harold: Duke University for instance and they gave a speech here in town, the Times Union was hall that they held the speech - speaker in. Ethel: Can you believe that? Harold: So we had our interest from there and then wanting to continue the dialog with things that we were interested in, why we started communicating with couples and other people. Ital: So when Duke University came they gave a metaphysical type lecture? Harold: Well it was just a talk of their research all of the things, one of the big interesting things was the research that they were developing out into the submarine of the shore and they representative from, had his documents and he went to I think the Statler Hotel in New York and they communicated at a given hour and the person that was in the submarine was submerged about 300 something feet below the water and they used the transmission telepathically and this is was all in Life Magazine and so they ... Ethel: What was his name? Harold: I don't recall his name... Ethel: Well he's well known. Harold: Yes he was. Ital: Was he a professor at Duke? Harold: Well he was a rep that they had chose to continue this telepathic dialog. Ital: Okay. So a researcher of telepathics? Harold: The transmission after a given hour was about 80 something percent accuracy. Ethel: He was very well known, I can't remember his name and it says in the annals of time so to speak or history that. He worked with his wife, they both worked together. Ital: So when you first started off did you have a mixed congregation, different races, or did it take a while before that happened? Harold: It was pretty much mixed from the very beginning. Ethel: From the beginning, yes. Ital: Right here in Jacksonville. Harold/Ethel: Yes. Ethel: You should know we don't look at color.
